Travel eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM: what is cheapest in 2026?

An honest comparison of your home operator's roaming, a local SIM card and a travel eSIM — with the EU roaming rules and the countries where roaming gets expensive.

There are three ways to stay online abroad: use your home plan in roaming, buy a local SIM card on arrival, or install a travel eSIM before you fly. Here is when each one wins.

Roaming with your home plan

Inside the EU, EEA and a few other countries, EU customers roam "like at home" — the rules apply until 2032. Fair-use limits still cap the data you can use abroad, and they are often far below your home allowance. Outside the EU — the UK for many tariffs, Switzerland, Turkey, the USA, Asia — roaming quickly costs several euros per megabyte or comes as an expensive day pass.

A local SIM card

Usually the cheapest per gigabyte, but you need a shop, often a passport registration, a free SIM slot and time on arrival. Your own number is gone while the local SIM is in the phone.

A travel eSIM

You buy and install it at home on Wi-Fi, and it starts counting when you connect at your destination. Your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and SMS, there is no shop and no passport, and prices are close to local SIM rates in most countries. The phone must support eSIM — almost every iPhone from the XR/XS and most Android flagships since 2020 do; check yours on our devices page.
